About

database architect by day

In my day job, I work for a FTSE100 company as a database architect, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining databases and SQL Server instances on a number of tin-, VM-, and cloud-based environments. I’m learning other technologies as we work to move into OpenShift containers.

I am a certificed SAFe Practioner, and will soon be studying for my CBCI.

hacker, geek, FLOSS advocate

I have been looking for ways to give back to the hacker community for many years. I took part in Hacktoberfest 2017, and attended OggCamp in 2014 and 2018.

I’m currently in the process of building a badgemaker using a Raspberry Pi, and multiple ePaper displays. I’ll document the process and any supporting code to my Github account.

musician, podcaster, voice artist

As a musician, I’m a bit of a multi-instrumentalist – many instruments, master of none. I play – with varying degrees of competence – drums, piano, and bass. I’m the drummer in a covers band in my local area. I’ve also been known to sing.

As a podcaster, I’ve been podcasting for over 10 years. My main show is The Bugcast, a music and chat show which is streamed live every week. I also contribute to a number of other podcasts.

There’s not much going on with voice artistry, but if you need any voice work doing, let me know.

husband, father of three

I’ve been married to Caroline for nearly 18 years, and we have 3 utterly gorgeous children: Amy (12), Cara (11), and Alex (5). We live in a small mining village in South Yorkshire, UK.

coffee snob

I am most definitely a coffee snob. I own and use regularly a Nespresso machine, and at work we have a Bravilor filter machine which gets a fairly continual use throughout the day. I really appreciate the different tastes, aftertastes, and feels of a good cup of coffee which – of course – has to be taken without any additions. No milk, no sugar.

I don’t do instant coffee (with one exception).
